Redesigning Afterpay’s in-app search to move from merchant-led browsing to product-led discovery—unlocking higher intent shopping, better comparison, and stronger conversion.

Challenge & Opportunity

Afterpay’s search experience was underperforming at a critical moment in the user journey.

Customers came in with intent—but couldn’t act on it.

  • Search results were often irrelevant (~40% estimated)

  • No way to compare products across merchants

  • Limited filtering and refinement

  • Merchant-first structure didn’t match how people shop

At the same time, competitors had already set a new bar for product-level discovery and comparison.

Outcomes

A reimagined search experience that:

  • Returns relevant, product-level results

  • Aggregates listings across merchants––

  • Enables fast comparison (price, stock, payment plan)

  • Surfaces deals and Afterpay eligibility clearly

  • Reduces dead ends (no/irrelevant results)

Impact (Projected / Directional):
